The Secret of Danxia's Colorful Sands: How Nature Created a Wonder

The mountainous landscape stretching along the northwestern Gansu Province in China looks as if it was painted by an abstract artist who decided to use the entire palette of colors. The Colorful Sands of Zhangye Danxia (Zhangye Danxia) are not just a tourist location, but a geological phenomenon that evokes awe and scientific interest. These unique "rainbow" mountains, which are part of the Zhangye Danxia National Geopark, are one of the most striking natural attractions in the world.

What is Danxia?

The term "Danxia" (Danxia, 丹霞) literally translates to "red cloud" and is used in China to describe a special type of geomorphological landform, primarily composed of red sandstone and conglomerate that have undergone significant erosion. Danxia landscapes are common in the southeastern, southwestern, and northwestern regions of China, but Zhangye Danxia is the best known and most vivid representative due to the extraordinary saturation of its colors.

Interestingly, six areas of the Danxia landscape in Southern China, known as "China Danxia", were included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2010 as evidence of exceptional Earth-forming processes (see Wikipedia: China Danxia). Although Zhangye Danxia is not included in this group, its visual appeal surpasses many other sites.

Geological Symphony: How the Masterpiece Was Created

The secret of Zhangye Danxia's incredible palette lies in the region's geological history, spanning millions of years.

  • The Accumulation Epoch (Mesozoic): About 100 million years ago, during the Cretaceous period, a large basin existed in this area, collecting sedimentary rocks. These were primarily sand, silt, and clay, rich in iron oxides and other minerals. The red color of the rock comes from hematite — iron oxide ($Fe_2O_3$), which, under oxidizing conditions, gives the sedimentary rocks a characteristic rusty-red hue.

  • Tectonic Movements and Uplift: Approximately 24 million years ago, due to tectonic shifts associated with the formation of the Himalayas and the Tibetan Plateau, these horizontal layers of sedimentary rocks were compressed and uplifted. This led to the tilting of the layers, forming faults and fractures.

  • Erosion as the Artist: Over millions of years, wind, rain, and other atmospheric phenomena gradually eroded the soft layers of sandstone. Erosion not only gave the mountains bizarre shapes — towers, pillars, ravines, and valleys — but also exposed the multicolored rock layers.

Why So Many Colors?

If the red color is explained by hematite, where do the yellow, green, blue, and other shades that make Zhangye Danxia unique come from?

  1. Yellow and Brown: These colors are often due to the presence of other iron minerals, particularly limonite (iron hydroxide), which stains the rock yellow and yellowish-brown.

  2. Green: Green hues can be caused by copper oxides or chlorites. Sometimes the green color is the result of the reduction (deoxygenation) of iron oxide, converting red hematite into greenish ferrous minerals. This occurs in conditions where oxygen is absent, such as under the influence of groundwater and organic matter.

  3. Light Gray or White: These layers often consist of quartz, feldspar, or other minerals that do not contain significant amounts of iron oxides.

It is the alternation of layers, deposited in different geological epochs and containing different chemical elements, that creates the effect of the striped, rainbow-like landscape we see today.

Cultural Significance and Tourism

Until recently, Zhangye Danxia was relatively unknown to the world. Its popularity soared after it was recognized as a national geopark in 2002. The area gained even greater fame after Chinese media named it one of the most beautiful landforms in China in 2010.

Today, Zhangye Danxia National Geological Park (Zhangye Danxia National Geological Park) is a key tourist attraction on the ancient Silk Road. The park's infrastructure is well-developed, including special wooden walkways and viewing platforms, allowing visitors to safely observe this natural wonder without damaging the fragile rocks. The best time to visit is at sunset or sunrise, when the low light accentuates the texture and saturates the colors of the mountains.

This geological masterpiece is a reminder of the incredible power of nature and millions of years of patient geological construction. The Colorful Sands of Zhangye Danxia are a true secret, revealed by time and erosion.
